Allergic to Marketing?

Really creative people love to create. But most don’t really like to promote what they create.

I used to feel the same way, until I discovered a better way to view the process.

The problem with self-promotion is the “self” part. Much of today’s marketing efforts treat the target audience as disposable consumers, whose only value is to consume more to make them more money. It’s a terrible feeling when your favorite artisan is just going through the motions so you’ll buy their stuff. That’s not always the motive, but it is more than we’d wish. And if that’s our view of marketing, it’s no wonder why we’d want to avoid it.

Thankfully, there is another way.

Everything changes when we change our perspective and re-define marketing from “buy my stuff” to a sincere invitation to “join me on this journey.”

This means seeing like-minded people not as customers but as kindred spirits who have similar questions, interests, and challenges. You just happen to be a little further in your exploration of those topics. Your art is an invitation for them to join you on that journey.

Yes, it’s great when people want to buy our creations. But rather than constantly trying to sell them something or ask for a review, spend more time pouring into them as kindred spirits. Grow genuine relationships with a community rather than build ways to let AI or hired help interact (as you) with your followers. That shouldn’t be seen as a distraction. After all, aren’t they the reason you’re able to do what you do? Finally, commit to having a regular on-line presence rather than only appearing when you have something new to promote.

That’s a new way to see marketing. It doesn’t just feel better. It actually works better. Because it’s authentic.
