An Active Creator

The Creator’s Handbook. If I told you this ancient text from the Maker of Oceans and Stars existed, you’d likely want a copy. I would. Yet we can miss that this resource already exists. The Bible is the best resource on creativity. God is the original Creator.
The Bible begins by granting us a front-row seat to the greatest act of creation imaginable. Creation is quickly under attack as the enemy tempts Adam and Eve to create their own future. We see the created turn their back on the Creator. And the rest of the story through the book of Revelation is God restoring what was lost by making all things new. What other story or teaching can offer anything remotely close to that?
Genesis 1:1 opens with God actively creating.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2 NLT)
This isn’t a passage of passive facts to master or debate. It isn’t primarily informational but invitational. God isn’t just revealing that he’s creative. He’s modeling how true creativity brings order from chaos. And then he invites us to do the same…with him.
The first ways God chooses to make himself known are as a Creator and Father who we can know relationally and experientially. That central identity speaks to a key aspect of who he is...and who we are. This is why we love to make things of beauty and restore order. This aligns with God’s desire for reality.
He doesn’t just think creativity is good theoretically. Or appreciate it from a distance. He is actively creating order, light, oceans, sky, stallions, and wildflowers in the first chapters of Scripture.
God doesn’t just invite us to experience his original creation. He invites us to make new creations together with him. What could be better than that? Yet we have forgotten. The unraveling began when Adam and Eve allowed a lie to enter their system. Like a virus, it attacked the Creator’s original design and intent for humanity to make a life with God. Instead, they tried to make their own reality...without God.
You can almost imagine the first twitch in each of their eyes as the glitch began.
