Art Isn’t Inherently Good

There's nothing inherently good or magical about a book or a canvas or a song. Each is an empty vessel waiting to be filled. Their power (or lack) comes from what we fill them with. Our creations, if untethered from the Creator, will always be less than they could have been.

Why is so much art today so empty and dark? It's primarily due to a user error on our part. Because while our creativity originated with the Creator, it doesn’t always reflect the Creator.

How we create matters. If we choose to pursue our gifting without God, then it can’t contain an eternal spark. Because that spark comes from God…not our brilliance. Any creation, untethered from the Creator, will always be less than it could have been.

Their ultimate power (for good or for evil) comes from what we fill them with. And that comes from what we fill ourselves with. Before we fill the world with more of our art, let’s fill our minds and hearts with the things of God.

You’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. (Philippians 4:8 The Message)
