C. S. Lewis, Superman & You
C. S. Lewis said, “The soul is but a hollow which God fills.” Which means if we don’t allow God to fill our soul, something else will. The world has endless options.
Seeing everything as a container waiting to be filled will help you understand the world. A container is only as true or good as what it is filled with. This holds true for a church, a company, and even our favorite characters in movies or novels. Since boyhood, I’ve been a big fan of the Superman comic books. But he doesn’t stay the same over time. He is just a container for whatever the writer of each issue chooses to fill him with—even if he still looks the same on the outside.
The same holds true for us. Though the world tries to keep us focused on external appearances, these verses remind us the outside is never as important as the inside. Especially when it comes to the heart.
For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7 NKJV)
The internal matters far more than the external. Which is why, as C. S. Lewis said, we should only look to God to fill our empty places and weary hearts.
