Catching Big Ideas
The best ideas show up in the least expected moments. In the middle of the night, as we’re working out, during a long hot shower, or in the produce aisle at the grocery store. If we’re too busy to engage them, they tend to pass us by.
Poet Ruth Stone tells how, while working the fields, poems would come at her. "It was like a thunderous train of air and it would come barreling down at her over the landscape." If she didn't capture it, the words would "continue on across the landscape looking for another poet."
I never want an idea to rush past me in search of someone more present. That’s why I choose to always carry a journal with me. So anytime God wants to spark my curiosity, I’m ready. Even at the grocery store in the middle of the produce aisle.
Don’t let the thought slip away because it initially seems insignificant. Ideas rarely arrive fully formed. Unlike instant coffee, the best ones need time to percolate. They intrigue and woo us but refuse to give away their secrets too easily.
The Creator thought of the idea before you did. And he thought enough of you to trust you with it. Even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone else, stay with it and stay with God as you explore what could be. The world may think you’ve lost it…but you’re actually on the verge of finding it.
