Caught in a Brain Storm

We often refer to the moment of a breakthrough solution or idea as “when lightning strikes”. That sounds exhilarating, except for the fact that it’s not wise to hang out in a lightning storm.

But we do need to risk new experiences and ask “what if” questions to ignite our imagination. And that rarely happens while sitting on the couch eating potato chips. As the rock band Fleetwood Mac sings, “Thunder only happens when it’s raining.” And lightning only happens when the atmosphere is turbulent.

It’s interesting that the word brainstorm combines an image of our brain with a mental storm of rapid-fire ideas. Unlike a lightning storm, we can hang out in a brain storm.

One thing’s certain. Playing it safe in our creativity will lead to boredom—not breakthrough—every time. What new places could our art take us to if we traded the well-traveled paths we’ve been on for a road trip with God into the wild unknown?
