Craft Isn’t Enough

It’s essential we master the craft of our chosen form of creativity. If we don’t commit to this, our ideas and offerings will fall short of what they could have been. Every true artisan knows this.

But craft alone is never enough. Secular entertainment offerings are frequently well-crafted—filled with stunning cinematography, stirring soundtracks, unbelievable effects, and critically acclaimed writers, actors, producers, and publishers. And much of it is rotten at the core. It is well-crafted crud that dishonors God and goes against the way he designed us to live, love, and worship. But it looks good on the outside.

Christian entertainment options, unfortunately, don’t fare much better. Rather than offer original works from co-creating with the Creator of galaxies, we tend to offer cleaner yet still formulaic versions of what’s popular in the general market. It should be the opposite—where we are setting the trends because God is giving us ideas we could never imagine in our own strength (Jeremiah 33:3).

So craft alone is never enough. Nor does it come first. We must begin with God. That ensures we have something worth saying. Then we can master how best to say it.

Invite God’s presence to saturate your mind and heart as you pursue what makes you come alive. From the first spark of an idea to the expertise required to see it through, he will be with you every step of the way.
