Don’t Normalize Halloween

Let’s stop giving Halloween a pass simply due to childhood memories, cute kids’ costumes, or the fun of trick-or-treating. Just because there are seemingly harmless aspects of the day doesn’t alter the fact that Halloween is saturated in evil.

The focus on death, witches, ghosts, and skeletons isn’t playful or neutral. To decorate our homes with these images, to wear costumes as adults that are overly violent or sexual, or to watch horror movies isn’t just “getting into the holiday spirit.” It’s actually allowing demonic spirits access into our minds and lives. That’s not being festive. It’s being foolish.

By all means savor the fall season. It’s a beautiful time of the year filled with vibrant colors, festivals and traditions, and incredible food and drink.

But let’s stop rationalizing or normalizing Halloween—for us and any children in our lives. Because no matter how innocent things may seem at earlier ages, it doesn’t stay that way. Not with Halloween. The roots go deep into rancid soil. The fruit, no matter how sweet the first bite, is bad.

The prophet Isaiah warns us not to be casual or naïve about the spiritual battle between the light and the darkness: “How terrible it will be for people who call good things bad and bad things good, who think darkness is light and light is darkness, who think sour is sweet and sweet is sour.” (Isaiah 5:20 NCV)
