Everyone You Encounter

“Remember that everyone you meet is afraid of something, loves something, and has lost something.”

I first encountered these powerful words from H. Jackson Brown Jr. decades ago in Life’s Little Instruction Book

As my counselor (now in his eighties) regularly reminds me, the deepest needs of every single person is to be fully seen, fully known, and fully loved. Tragically, most go through life never experiencing this.

It’s a timeless reminder that others aren’t there just to make my day or situation easier. Everyone we encounter is going through something. We don’t have to know the details. But we do need to assume the best and lead with empathy and kindness. And hope that others offer us that same grace.

Because we’re all afraid of something, love something, and have lost something.
