Hold It Together

-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-

When you think of Jesus, what’s the first image that comes to mind?

Do you see a babe in a manger, a thirty-year-old man in a robe and sandals, or the eternal Creator of everything? It’s fine to see all three, but we often miss how Christ doesn’t just care about our creativity, but is supreme over all creation.

God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. (John 1:3 NLT)

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. (Colossians 1:15-17 NLT)

This will prove helpful when you consider how Jesus relates to your creativity. If you’re a storyteller, Jesus didn’t just tell great parables. He created the cosmos and story and Eden and everything. If you’re a woodworker, Jesus wasn’t just a carpenter. He created the trees and forests. If you’re a surfer, Jesus didn’t just walk on water. He created the oceans. He made everything—including realms we can’t see. And he holds all creations together—including your creations.

Our best creativity, without Jesus, will always be only partial. How can anything be fully realized if he is excluded from the process? Consider your favorite movies, songs, paintings, restaurants, novels, inventions, and ideas. As good as they are—and many are stunning—they aren’t all they could be if God isn’t an active part of their creation. If we don’t include Jesus in the building of a project, what will hold it together? Us?

Yet if Jesus is holding all creation together, how have things gotten so off track? We’ll explore that next.
