The Way We Learned to Fly
As your son or daughter considers what to pursue in younger years or focus on after high school—take the pressure off. The same holds true for students you teach at church or school or sports.
Help them see this chapter of life as a test flight.
Ask what makes their heart come alive. Their entire future doesn't depend on one test, one college, or one job. Just because you went to college doesn’t mean they should. Don’t discourage them from the very thing they are drawn to simply because you can’t see how they could make a living from it. That’s what parents of artists have worried about for centuries. But when God gives us a gift, it’s for a reason. Explore that with them.
Remember, these years for them are a test flight. Don’t weigh them down with your expectations or fears. Give them advice. But then, give them a runway and wings to try.
Though we forget, it’s the way we learned to fly. It’s how they’ll learn to fly as well.
