Knowing About God Isn’t Knowing God

We can know a lot about God and never actually know him.

Many will say to me, “Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.” But I will reply, “I never knew you…” (Matthew 7:22-23, NLT)

What a disruptive warning from Jesus. We can do a lot for God…and miss the main thing. This truth plays out in our creativity as well.

Our gifting isn’t primarily for us to do things for God, hoping to earn God’s favor or prove our worth from what we do. That’s conditional creation.

Our gifting is an invitation for us to pursue what we love with God out of a place of joy and expectancy…with no guarantee but God’s presence. That’s relational creation.

May we never get so busy doing things for God that we miss what he’s doing for us. Whatever it is, you can be certain his focus is more on intimacy than efficiency.

Doing things for God is the opposite of entering into what God does for you. (Galatians 3:12, The Message)
