Love to Create, Hate to Promote

-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-

Creators love to create. But most don’t really like to promote what they create.

I felt the same way until I discovered a better way to view the process.

The problem with self-promotion is the “self” part. Much of today’s marketing efforts treat the target audience as disposable consumers, whose only value is to consume more to make the creators more money. Thankfully, that’s not always the motive. But it’s a terrible feeling to discover someone you admire is just going through the motions so you’ll buy their stuff.

If that’s marketing, it’s no wonder we’d rather avoid it. Thankfully, there’s another way.

Everything changes when we change our perspective and redefine marketing from “buy my stuff” to a sincere invitation to “join this journey.” Those with similar questions, interests, passions, or problems are kindred spirits. Spend time getting to know them and pouring into the community rather than asking them to pour into you.

Yes, it’s great when people want to buy our creations. But rather than constantly trying to sell something or ask for a review, see people as community rather than customers. Your focus becomes more about transformation than transactions. There will always be financial realities, but this approach isn’t a distraction from your goal. It’s pouring into the people who make your business or service possible. They are the reason you’re able to do what you do.

Finally, commit to having a regular online presence rather than only appearing when you have something new to promote.

That’s a new way to see marketing. It doesn’t just feel better. It actually works better. Because it’s authentic.
