Make Yourself Irrelevant
How are you actively making yourself irrelevant? It’s a question you rarely hear.
I’m not primarily referring to the areas of your life you’re unsatisfied with—but in the very places you’ve experienced a level of acclaim. I know, it sounds counter-intuitive. But look at it this way. If you’re not willing to release what you’ve already excelled at, you’ll have no bandwidth for what’s next.
I experienced the tension of this first-hand when I was leaving my role as a Fiction publisher to join a ministry. I’d spent a decade as a successful publisher but suddenly I needed to mentor my successor. My goal during the transition? To make myself irrelevant so my team would follow their new leader. It was humbling, but I had to fully release my past role before I could enter the unknown of what awaited.
When you sense God’s nudge into something new creatively, you won’t get there by clinging to the present (especially if it’s working). If you don’t want to grow stagnant, you must occasionally risk becoming irrelevant in what you’re known for to try what’s next. That said, I’m not suggesting you jump off a cliff while trying to sew a parachute on the way down! This isn’t running away from something hastily. It’s a mature decision that involves upfront conversation with—and counsel from—those closest to you, especially if you’re the primary financial provider for your family.
The goal isn’t to forever flit from one bright shiny thing to the next. It’s to pursue God’s lead (what he has for you) and his timing (when to do it). And to do so with purpose, commitment, and intention, meaning you don’t walk away or lose interest when things get hard. Only then are you ready to enter into what’s next… with him!
