Mirror to Your Past

The sun wasn’t up yet, but I was. My daughter had a 12-hour drive back to college and I was in dad mode to make sure her vehicle was trip-ready. That involved scraping ice off her windshield, filling her gas tank, and checking the fluid levels and tire pressure.

On the way to the gas station, God filled my heart in an unexpected way. Glancing in the rear-view mirror, I noticed a clear sticker on the lower right of it with the words “Jesus loves you” followed by a small heart.

Whenever she looked into her rear-view mirror, in addition to whatever was behind her, she would see those three orienting words.

Now the words snuck up on me, before my first cup of coffee. And it made me curious. What words do I tend to hear when I look back at my past? It’s not typically that Jesus loves me. Usually it’s “I should have______” or “Why did I ______?” or “What was I thinking?”.

How about you? When you glance in the mirror of life to see what’s behind you, do you encounter words of grace, forgiveness, and mercy…or shame, regret, and disqualification? No matter what you’ve done or what’s been done to you in the past, Jesus has never stopped loving or pursuing you. Never.

He’s a good dad who’s always ready to fill your tank—and your heart—with reminders of his love.
