So many creative people have ceded a part of their skill and confidence to AI. This is a self-inflicted glitch that will only grow worse over time.
Why is there such an unhealthy dependence on something that didn’t even exist for almost all of history? Suddenly we can’t live, create, or make decisions without it. It completes us. Or so we think.
Why is this? Some are convinced they need AI to make them or their project better. Others believe that the invasion of AI is unstoppable, so why resist? And then there are those who naively embrace every new technology that comes out like a kid in a candy store. They are confident they can draw appropriate boundary lines where needed, convinced they will use AI but not be used by it. Really? So those who can’t outthink their creative issues without AI can somehow outthink AI so things don’t get out of hand?
I refuse to give ground to AI. If you’re curious why I feel so strongly about this topic, my book Risk the Real: How to Defy the Rise of the Artificial goes into great detail. But I’ll summarize part of my thinking here: As we look to AI more than to God for answers, we become dependent on something artificial for life. And the more we use it, the deeper down the rabbit hole we go. The emergence of the new generations of AI will challenge our concept of reality in ways we can’t fully fathom. The result will not be greater intimacy with God, but an alternative to the reality God created.
Deep down, something in us simultaneously craves what AI offers as we also fear where it is taking us. We wonder if it will ultimately rescue or replace us. So we ask AI about our fate and its intentions...and (sigh) we believe it. In the meantime, we wonder what it is doing to us as we infuse it more and more into our lives.
Walk away from it now, while you still can. Despite the immense pressure to do otherwise, you can defy and resist AI. You can create without it. Many are doing so.
I know this is a complex topic. Let’s stay with it a bit more.
