Nothing Affects Your Art More

You really can’t create something that offers more imagination, love, or beauty than what flows from your heart. Storytellers, for instance, can’t tell a greater story than the one they are living. Great art can’t flow from a numb heart. Nor can it convey more risk, love, or faith than you have.

In short, nothing affects the trajectory of your art more than the trajectory of your life.

As author Billy Coffey says so well: "There is a learning curve to writing that often goes overlooked—and that is the experience of living—of plunging headlong into life and daring to swim in both the clear and the murky waters, and then using pen and paper as a towel to dry yourself off."

We long for our art to take us to new and uncharted places. But the blank canvas looks back at us and says, "No, you must go there first."
