Outward Busyness, Inward Emptiness

The more accelerated our lives get, the more we’re tempted to measure who we are by what we do. Because, well, we’re doing a lot.

Externally, we’re hitting it out of the park. The results look good…as long as no one looks under the hood.

An excess of outward busyness is almost always masking some form of inward emptiness. That’s because it feels better, at least in the short run, to stay busy with work, hobbies, and vacation than to slow done and actually deal with the deeper waters of our lives.

Eventually, a life of operating above capacity will catch up with us. We can either keep it up until we burn out or implode. Or we can actively choose to downshift before we crash.

Doing less in this season isn’t a sign of laziness or inefficiency. It’s actually the first step to being more. God desires our hearts more than our productivity. He’s far more interested in our internal transformation than our external performance. He’s ready if you are.

“Doing things for God is the opposite of entering into what God does for you.” (Galatians 3:11-12 The Message)
