Pets Just Know

During my last year in college, I decided to get a dog. That one decision led to sixteen years of joy.

The song playing on the radio during our ride home was Brandy (a classic 1972 song from Looking Glass). That’s how she got her name. From that day on, Brandy was my constant companion through college, my early advertising career in Dallas, and eventually my marriage and the birth of our first two children.

In her later years, Brandy lost her hearing but still somehow knew when I was on my way home from work. She’d rise and wait expectantly at the window until my car pulled into the driveway.

Once she was deaf, I wrestled with how to communicate with her until God kindly reminded me that words weren’t necessary. Our pets know. With them, there is a bond of unconditional love that transcends language...and even the ability to see or hear.

After her passing in 2003, I created a short story with few words and simple art to celebrate this bond between a person and pet. The illustrations are hand-drawn by my good friend Scott.

The book’s not available for purchase…but God nudged me to share it today for all who have been recipients of the unconditional, extravagant love of a dog.
