Pushed Past Your Limit?

I hate the phrase “necessary evil.” It’s been used to justify all sorts of self-serving decisions over time.

There’s a quote from the movie The Kingdom of Heaven, set during the Crusades, where Balian has a chance to right an evil kingdom by becoming its king. But for that to happen, he’d have to allow the current evil king to be murdered by the king’s soldiers. Even the king’s wife, Sibylla, thinks this is the best plan. When Balian refuses to go along with it, Sibylla responds, “There will be a day when you will wish you had done little evil to do greater good.”

It’s a trap the enemy sets for us through a seemingly impossible conflict or awkward moment. You feel alone. God appears to either be absent or silent. And, really, it’s ultimately for the greater good—whether it requires a massive moral failure or a so-called “little white lie” on the front end to get there.

Compromise appears to be the only option. Except it isn’t. As Scripture reminds us: No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it. (1 Corinthians 10:13 MSG)

God never requires us to compromise or negotiate with evil to accomplish his plans. In his most well-known prayer, Jesus forever defeats this misguided way of thinking by teaching us to pray God’s will be done as we ask God to deliver us from evil. And he does...every time.
