Rise of the Artificial

-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-

AI is being celebrated as the biggest innovation in history. An unprecedented game changer for every person, home, and industry. The answer to whatever we face. It is invading every aspect of our lives—with us gladly inviting it in.

The allure is hard to resist. What’s the downside of tapping into a supposedly neutral resource that can do things faster and better than we can—for free? An entity that’s equal parts magic genie, personal assistant, secret weapon, and loyal friend. It’s been said that AI doesn’t have a soul, and that’s true. But it does impact our souls in all the wrong ways as we look to it for not just information, but intimacy.

In the short term, AI may seem like the answer to your Creativity Glitch. But in the long-term, this addiction to and dependence on the instant will prove to be one of your biggest glitches. Even if you only use it for select aspects of your pursuits, the end result is still an unreal mashup of you and AI. I’ll share more about the toxicity of AI on our creativity in Part 4.

For now, consider these four questions:

1. How can outsourcing our ideas and imagination to the artificial make us or our offerings more real?

2. What is the cost of becoming dependent on AI to do our work faster or cheaper, knowing it doesn’t have our best interests at heart? Or even have a heart?

3. The more AI learns you, the easier it will eventually be to replace your ideas, your voice, and your value. Have you considered that while you’re learning and using AI, it is also learning and using you?

4. AI hasn’t existed for 99.9 percent of human history. Everything created until recently was created without it. Why does it now seem so indispensable?

We’ve been looking at the downward creative trajectory happening all around us. What’s even more troubling is the Creativity Glitch happening within us.
