Stuck in a Small Story?

When the world closes in around us, it’s easy to go into survival mode. We tighten our grip to control what we can because the rest of life feels so out of control.
But what if we allow the unexpected and unwanted interruptions to remind us that we were never in control in the first place? What if we finally decided to release the illusion of control?
The belief that we can control our lives keeps us in a small story. We want safety and certainty, but God guarantees neither. He only guarantees his presence. And that has to be enough.
What has been your experience on this front? How much have you been willing to risk with God? Where do you find yourself settling for “safe” or what’s worked before?
Though it feels risky, we tend to grow the most on journeys where we have the least control. What if you viewed each day as a road trip with God? A Father-Daughter or Father-Son journey into the unknown together designed to stir your heart for the adventure to come while also calming it. Because it isn’t up to you. He knows where to go and has already determined the best pace, rest stops, and even the scenic detours. It’s not up to you to provide the gas, figure out the costs, or map it all out. Rather than try to control every aspect of the trip, you get to release control. Your only choice is whether to say yes, hop in, trust him, and enjoy the ride through life’s hills and valleys.
Relinquish the script you’ve been holding so tight. Replace it with expectancy for the story God has for you. And enjoy the ride.

We get stuck when we try to control the details and people around us. Not only does this not work, it is exhausting. Releasing the illusion of control may feel risky, but try it and see if you feel a sense of relief from letting go of what you were never meant to carry.
