The Coming Good Times

There’s a saying I’ve posted in my office with this simple encouragement: Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.

I’m not sure who first said this, but I like it. The words remind me that I live in a Story, that God is the author, and that in spite of the turbulence of this particular page or chapter, it will ultimately end well.

Do the words sound overly optimistic? Too Pollyanna-ish? If so, I understand. But it is also the prevailing worldview of Scripture. Listen to how Paul puts it:

That’s why I don’t think there’s any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens. (Romans 8:18 The Message)

Okay, you might be thinking. I’m all in for the coming good times. But what am I supposed to do now…in the present hard times? Glad you asked. Don’t miss the last line of the scripture: “Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.” That isn’t wishful thinking. It’s describing a Kingdom reality happening now.

Ask God to help you taste this joyful anticipation as it grows deeper in these present hard times. While you’re at it, also ask how your creativity can align with that reality.
