The Creativity Glitch
-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-
We are designed to create with intent and purpose. Not to glitch and stumble.
I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. (Proverbs 4:11-12 NIV)
But when it comes to our creativity, we often are hampered and do stumble. As noted at the outset of our journey, we are creative because we have the Creator’s DNA in us. Author Dorothy Sayers puts it this way: “The characteristic common to God and man is...the desire and ability to make things.” What opposes that desire and ability has gone unnamed for too long. It’s time to expose it, address it, and overcome it.
Here is my definition for the Creativity Glitch: The Creativity Glitch occurs when our original design is compromised, disrupting our desire and ability to create with God through our presence and gifting.
Think of the glitch as a broken connection. When we are aligned with God, we have access to unlimited resources, including inner strength, stability rooted in his love, complete restoration, fullness of life, and supernatural power.
When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong...Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. (Ephesians 3:14-19 NLT)
When we operate in our own strength, the opposite is true. Our experience of God as Creator and Father is disrupted. We have limited resources, lack inner strength, are unstable with shallow roots, incomplete, and miss the fullness of life and power that comes from God. In this condition, we work harder but achieve less that matters. The creative process goes from a place of joy to an elusive, unreliable, slippery place.
We’ll look at how this plays out—around us and within us—in the coming chapters.
