What We Feed Grows
-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-
There’s an old saying that what we feed grows. And we’ve been feeding our stuck places for too long by inadvertently nurturing our glitches. You can hear the limitations in statements like these:
There’s just no time to pursue my interests. No one’s interested in what I most want to do.
If someone says something negative about my efforts, I shut down.
I never hear from God.
I’ll know I’ve made it when the right people or group validates me.
These statements don’t reflect who you are or what’s possible. They reflect fears, agreements, and misplaced validation. When we feed them, our glitches grow.
But there is an even deeper caution here. When we are not aligned with God, we become tempted to feed our selfish desires. What is the fruit of doing this? They progressively entice us and drag us away from God. Ultimately, this leads not to life but to death.
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death. (James 1:14-15 NLT)
The antidote involves us allowing God—as Creator and Father—to feed our souls.
So, my very dear friends, don’t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the crown of all his creatures. (James 1:16-18 MSG)
Imagine how much easier it would be to address our glitches and not get thrown off course by believing God sees us as the crown of all his creations—and then creating from that identity.
