When We Focus on Lack

Do you primarily see your life through a lens of scarcity or abundance?
Whether you focus on lack or provision, it will feel true. When we focus on lack, the sense of scarcity seeps into everything. From hours in the day to money in our bank account, there’s never enough. Even in relationships. Because if resources are scarce, another person’s victory can feel like our loss.
Perhaps you’ve been told you don’t have enough experience to pursue your ideas. You’re too young or haven’t paid your dues—or are too old and it’s too late. In either case, time isn’t on your side. There’s not enough of it or you’re running out of it.
To counter my own feelings of scarcity I began keeping a journal where I would jot down daily encounters with abundance. Like when the person in front of me at the drive-through paid for my order. Over time, I became expectant of how God would provide—in both small and large ways. Whenever the lie of scarcity tried to rear its ugly head, I’d return to my journal of proof and see page after page of God’s unexpected abundance.
For those who love God, lack never gets the last word. God never worries about running out of time. He created time and operates outside of its human restrictions. In every way, his kingdom is one of abundance rather than scarcity.
If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving...Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. (Matthew 6:30-33 MSG)
Scarcity is a Glitch Maker. Here’s your Glitch Breaker.
When facing loss or scarcity, hold firm to the belief that you have a good Father who will see you through. Not barely, but abundantly. Right in the middle of the unknown, even before any answers arrive, boldly proclaim God’s goodness as the deeper, truer reality. Then stay expectant.
