Who Is Your Art For?
As kindred spirits on this journey of God, story, and creativity, I trust you desire to create with God.
Surprisingly, many miss that. They think the goal is to create for God…while missing the intimacy of creating together with him. Creating “for” God is good. Creating “with” God is infinitely better.
But my focus today is who you’re creating for on a human level.
The easy answer is…everyone. But that’s kind of like saying your favorite jeans are for everyone. Nope, that pair is for you. If you’re making jeans for others, you have to consider what fits them best.
If you think what you’re making is generally for everyone, then it’s specifically for no one.
Many creatives create for themselves. And then wonder why no one else is later interested.
But if you’re creating for others, your art must focus outward—not inward. It needs to address the interests or questions of those on a specific journey. It’s helpful if you’re on a similar journey, but you need to consider which stories and colors and pace will be most helpful for them…even if you prefer a different speed or approach. Because what you’re designing isn’t for you, but for others.
We do ourselves a disservice when we think the purpose of others is primarily to buy or praise our creations, to celebrate us. The end users aren’t a commodity for our creations. They are fellow travelers we have the honor of sharing ideas with.
