Beware the Expert

Beware the self-proclaimed experts who tell you there’s only one way to accomplish your goals or why your ideas will never work. 

When anyone believes they have all the answers, they miss the chance to learn, think new thoughts, or be surprised. They calcify over time, which is why most industry experts tend to give industry answers that rely on what’s worked in the past to make future decisions. 

But that isn’t how to create with God. Creation is bringing something new into existence. It is the opposite of re-creation—which relies on formula to duplicate what’s worked in the past. That’s great for a muffin mix. Not for your art. 

In a world that values formula and control, the rare bohemians are those who set aside the way things have been done for what’s never been done. I’ll give Paul the last word on the topic.

We, of course, have plenty of wisdom to pass on to you...but it’s not popular wisdom, the fashionable wisdom of high-priced experts that will be out-of-date in a year or so. God’s wisdom is something mysterious that goes deep into the interior of his purposes. (1 Corinthians 2:6-9 MSG)
