Breathe Before You Speak
We’ve all had moments where we run out of patience, ideas, time or money. But more and more, I’m running out of words.
It usually happens after a long conversation, full day at work, or intense creative session. I’ve poured out all that’s within me. Any attempt at words would hold little value. My focus is scattered. My brain is numb. My heart is depleted.
Rather than fake it, I now kindly tell whoever is asking more of me than I have in the moment, “I’m all out of words right now. I’ll get back to you soon.”
In situations with young children or an urgent work assignment, we may only have a few minutes. But that’s enough time to step outside or to practice a deep breathing exercise. Other times, you may have more margin. Either way, more words aren’t helpful until you tend to your heart, mind, and soul. Racing forward with an empty tank is never wise.
Watch your words and hold your tongue; you’ll save yourself a lot of grief. (Proverbs 21:23 MSG)
