Conduits for Your Creativity
I bring a small journal with me wherever I go. Unlike a phone, it isn’t a distraction device. It is a sign that I expect to hear from God anytime, anywhere. Especially in the areas he’s inviting me to pursue with him...like my creativity.
Said another way, it’s impossible to create with God if you don’t believe he has anything to say to you.
This counterintuitive practice has proven immensely helpful for my creativity. It can be for you as well. Begin by buying an inexpensive physical notepad or journal. You may be tempted to just use the notes feature on your phone. That’s a terrible idea. You don’t need another reason to be tethered to your screen. The singular purpose for this journal is to capture ideas—not your to-do list or the ups and downs of your day. Use another journal for those things.
Take this journal everywhere you go other than the shower (unless you have waterproof pages!) Bring it to restaurants, church services, team meetings, movies, and sports events. Place it on your nightstand before going to bed. When someone or something sparks an idea, jot it down.
I use multi-colored sharpies to scribble quick notes and doodles. This isn’t going to be a treasured volume I place on a shelf to read decades from now. It is a self-destructing journal meant to capture ideas that I can later transfer to a more permanent file—or realize they aren’t worth pursuing. Once that decision is made, I rip those pages out until eventually there are none left. I then get a new journal and the process continues. If tearing out pages feels too disruptive, perhaps you’re valuing the form or importance of a journal more than the ideas you’re chasing with God. Instead, treat these journals as temporary conduits for your creativity.
Stay expectant for how God might say or reveal something at any moment. When he does, you’ll be ready to capture it...if you have your journal with you.
