What Should You Create?
I’ll admit it. The headline was a trick question. I can tell you how to create...but not what to create.
You discover what to create as you pursue your creativity with God. As you do, it’s important to stop reacting to the reactions of others. If you downgrade the worth of your work based on the reactions of others, you're giving them way too much power over your gifting. A rejection of your art could mean it wasn’t meant for that person. Or it may be a sign your vision requires more hard work before it’s ready for prime time. The first option requires grace for the other person. The second—grace for yourself.
When you ask others what you should create, you become an order taker rather than a visionary. No one can ask for what’s never been done. They just ask for slight variations of what already exists.
Creating the first of something original is risky. The world rarely knows how to categorize it. So don’t misinterpret the initial confusion or reaction as a sign you did something wrong. You did something new and the world needs time to catch up. You’re forging a new path that didn’t exist until you created it.
God isn’t a hesitant Creator. He didn’t worry what others would think about his idea of an elephant or an aardvark. He created in trueness. He invites you to do the same. Pursue your passions proactively with him. Then let the world react to it…rather than you reacting to the world.
