Conversations with the Creator of Galaxies
-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-
It’s impossible to do life with God if you don’t believe he has anything to say to you.
What good father never speaks directly or intimately to his children, expecting them to go through all of life reading his letters and figuring out how that applies to their every decision? Yet many go through their entire life believing we only hear from God through Scripture. That’s certainly our foundation. But it’s not the only way he communicates.
Scripture is overflowing with stories of God speaking to the hearts of his followers. And he hasn’t lost his voice. Jesus says his followers know his voice (John 10:3-4). In Exodus 33:11, we’re told, “The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one who speaks to a friend” (NIV). This is available to us.
Should you pursue that opportunity? Change strategies? Rest for a season? The only way to know is to ask God and believe he will answer. We aren’t brainstorming best options. We’re asking the Creator of galaxies for his guidance. Without this, we’re left to figure out everything on our own. What God offers instead is an active, intimate relationship. He invites us into a story where we live as sons and daughters of an engaged Father rather than as orphans trying to make things happen.
When we live in this story of “with,” we’re never alone in any chapter of life.
If you aren’t hearing God’s voice within your spirit, take the pressure off for immediate answers and be open to how he will respond. It will never contradict Scripture, but could happen through a word, person, memory, or other ways. If it’s a high-stakes issue, ask others you trust, who aren’t affected by the decision, to listen on your behalf.
Creating for God doesn’t require conversation. You can do that by yourself.
Creating with God revolves around conversation. It’s a dance for two. If you struggle with this issue, consider this: You may not think God speaks to us today, but would you want to hear his voice if he did? Is the desire there? If so, express your longing and stay expectant. A good resource is John Eldredge’s book, Walking with God.
