Decision or Vision Problem?
-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-
When all options before us look equally good—or bad—we aren’t seeing clearly. Rather than things converging, our thoughts seem to be cloudy.
God provided a helpful example of this while I was writing this part of the book. My wife was having an off day. She didn’t feel sick but was having a hard time focusing or making decisions. It was like a haze had descended around her. This wasn’t her norm, and I was concerned. We spent the evening trying to figure out what was going on. It wasn’t until we were getting ready for bed that the answer came. That’s when she realized she had put her prescription contact lenses in the wrong eyes.
She didn’t have a decision problem. She had a vision problem.
How we see the world is so essential. When God is at the center, our vision is focused. But the farther we get from him, the more our vision becomes blurred. When chaos has our focus, we become reactive to it. Another problem that affects our vision is when we primarily spend more time staring at screens than into the eyes of others. Even when we spend time in nature, we often do so while on our phones or AirPods.
God wants to train us to see beyond and through these distractions. It’s impossible to create real beauty or be fully present when we’re lost in chaos or stuck in the artificial.
Thankfully, Jesus came to help us regain our sight. A simple yet powerful prayer in these moments is helpful. Something like this: “Jesus, show me how you see things. Shine your light on this issue. Give me eyes to see what’s really going on.” Sometimes I’ll even shorten it to “Let there be light.”
I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can see something of the future he has called you to share. (Ephesians 1:18 TLB)
Yes, God. May the unique aspects of what you’re calling us into converge now. Let there be clarity and let there be light as we prepare to commit to what’s next. Let our creativity reflect aspects of your unseen realm as we see you more clearly.
