Stuck Between Two Choices?
-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-
At this point, you may be trying to hold on to too many things that have your interest. Letting go of any can feel painful. But not letting go will prove even more so.
We can do a lot. But can we really do it all?
The world dangles endless choices before us. We’re encouraged to do more, say more, try more, and achieve more. The posters at the gym where I work out proclaim, “You Can Do It All.” It plays to the illusion that we really can do it all and have it all if we just learn to balance everything in our lives perfectly (or maybe join the right health club).
But we can’t do it all. It’s not only impossible—it’s cruel to pretend otherwise.
You can put your family life above work. Or you can give your job top priority. You can overcommit and give many things a small piece of yourself. Or you can choose a life of simplicity. You can master a skill through patient dedication. Or you can let social media consume your day. Most days we can’t even balance our checkbooks, much less our family, work, finances, health, home, sports, rest, and creativity.
It’s an overwhelming, never-ending, no-win game–like trying to keep ten plates spinning simultaneously. Let’s set the spinning plates down and stop trying to balance it all. Why is balance the goal, anyway?
A little bit of everything makes a lot of nothing. Rather than dabbling in much but mastering little, choose to live completely unbalanced—unapologetically pouring more time, resources, and attention into what matters most. The art of soul care involves regularly saying no to many things so you can say yes to the people and projects that matter most. “Getting it all done” isn’t a realistic option. “Being fully present when it counts” is.
If you’re standing between two choices now and are unsure which way to go, a good place to start is to ask which path will draw you closer to God. That’s the ultimate goal.
