Degrees of Stuck

-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-

There’s not just one way to be stuck in our creative pursuits.

It can be everything from experiencing no forward momentum to feeling like there are no options to—in rare cases—being totally shut down. To begin this section, take a moment to answer the following questions:

  1. At what point in the creative project do you tend to get stuck?

  2. When that happens, what fear or limitation rises up?

  3. How long does it tend to last?

  4. Where are you creatively stuck right now?

It’s good to have this data top of mind as you discover ways to get unstuck.

One side note before we dive in: If you feel completely shut down, numb most days, or find it hard to get out of bed each morning—not just in your creativity but in most aspects of life—I encourage you to find a trusted counselor or provider to help you map out a healing journey based on your specific situation. Then incorporate these ideas for your creativity as they align with the larger plan.

When I ask people what product comes to mind for getting things unstuck, they often say WD40. You can spray it on almost anything metal, even if rusted, to help it move as intended. Interestingly, the name WD40 represents the power of not giving up. It stands for Water Displacement-40th Formula. In other words, the inventor got stuck the first thirty-nine times working on something that would ultimately be used to get things unstuck.

Unfortunately, WD40 won’t work for our stuck places. But there is a substance that will...Kintsugi.
