Doubting Your Creativity
-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-
You’re incredibly creative.
Notice your reaction to my words. Maybe you’ve only encountered rejection and believe your creativity isn’t valuable or worth fighting for. Perhaps you went from burning bright to burning out. Or you’ve been in a creative desert so long it’s starting to feel like home. Some of you are known and respected for your offerings. You’re on an upward trajectory, but what once came easily is now a struggle. The cracks are starting to show.
Wherever you are, let’s start here: You are creative.
Creativity isn’t limited to the few. The problem is that few invite the Creator into their creativity. Let’s make sure we do that now. Simply speak these words and believe them: God, even when I don’t feel creative and the world tells me I’m not creative, I renounce those lies and release my doubts. Help me with my unbelief. I proclaim that I am creative because I am your child and you are my Creator.
That’s good. Keep those words near where you create…as a reminder of what’s true.
Whether you’re currently in a season where everything is coming together or you’re ready to quit, this is for you. Because the Creativity Glitch affects us all. Our creativity has been compromised.
When you’re under that fog, you begin to doubt not just what you do…but who you are. It’s easy to believe that your creativity is slipping away (a lie), already gone (a bigger lie), or that it never existed (the biggest lie of all). And while we’re not immune to losing momentum, clarity, or hope, we don’t have to stay there.
So in this moment, allow me to offer what is true. I don’t know you, but I do know this: You are creative.
How can I be sure? There are two reasons. We’ll consider them one at a time. But first, I want to share what isn’t helpful.
