Espresso-Fueled Blur

I’ve always thought the word “metronome” had a fantastical otherworldly sound to it, a bit like the imaginary flux capacitor in the movie Back to the Future. But it’s actually the name of a device used by countless students as they learn how to play music at a consistent pace.

The metronome is an inverted pyramid with a small metal pendulum and sliding weight that controls how fast it pivots from left to right. Each swing creates an audible click, or beats-per-minute (BPM), that the musician follows.

What if we each have an internal metronome that we unknowingly follow in the beats of our life? Worse, what if it’s been stuck at the fastest setting for so long that we now accept an insane pace as the normal tempo for each day?

While a staccato pace might work for a song, an espresso-fueled blur isn’t a sustainable way to do life. The more we try, the more exhausted and empty we become. Yes, there’s always more to do. Of course there are busy seasons. Our to-do list needs to get done. But too many beats-per-minute leave us emotionally and spiritually beat up.

Jesus stands ready to recalibrate our internal metronome to the rhythm we were created for. Let his offer wash over you.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28-30 MSG)

Rather than rationalize our overwhelmed state of busyness, let’s allow Jesus to reset our internal metronome to a new tempo—his unforced rhythms of grace.
