Faith…In What?

Faith is held up as a really good thing. But I would say, it depends.

If that sounds heretical, stay with me.

We tend to treat “faith” as a magical talisman. If we just have faith, all will work out. But that’s not true. Putting our faith in this world, ourselves, our job, the lottery, the weather, the government, or the economy never turns out well.

That’s because the power of faith doesn’t come from faith itself.

Its power—or lack thereof—is dependent on who or what we place our faith in. And only God is worthy of our faith, because he alone is trustworthy and good and powerful enough to always come through. Everyone and everything else will ultimately let us down or fail.

Yes, we need faith. But it’s who we put our faith in that matters.

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 NLT)
