Great Minds Discuss Ideas
The next time you’re scrolling through social media or watching a breaking news story, ask yourself if what’s being discussed is focused on people and events…or ideas.
Perhaps you’re familiar with this quote, often attributed to former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt:
“Great minds discuss ideas,
average minds discuss events,
and small minds discuss people.”
The observation is both timeless and timely—especially as global chaos surges and our screens are relentlessly bombarding our minds with constant alerts and updates. It’s a massive amount of data about who did what and where it happened but almost no context of what’s really going on or what God is up to. Our culture is addicted to instant information but not nearly as interested in the big ideas that are actually shaping our lives and world.
Notice how discussions of people center on past or current events while discussions of ideas are forward looking. Ideas shift our focus from “what is” to “what if.”
If you want to invigorate your creativity, spend less time in the endless rabbit hole of breaking news and start spending more time discussing breakthrough ideas with kindred spirits and God.
