Hunger the World Can’t Fill
I’m finding less and less in this world that satisfies me. I hope the same is true for you.
The reason is simple. What fascinates the world no longer fascinates me. The hunger I have is one this world isn’t capable of filling.
Even in small ways, this is true. I used to spend hours in bookstores, always buying more books than my nightstand could hold. But my last several trips have been disheartening. The general market books are full of Ecclesiastes insights—empty human knowledge that’s just chasing the wind. At the same time, too many books by Christian publishers offer little more than feel-good messages from pastors and celebrities. These authors have large followings and little to say for such a time as this.
It’s good to ask God to let nothing but him satisfy you. That doesn’t mean you no longer enjoy the simple pleasures of his blessings. You’re just no longer looking for anyone or anything to fill you other than God.
As C. S. Lewis says, "If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” That other reality is coming…a new heaven and a new earth. In the meantime, accept no substitutions and stay expectant for this coming, better country.
“Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.” (Hebrews 11:16 NIV)
