Rough Waters Ahead

The word sea change isn’t just used as a nautical term. It refers to any profound transformation. And this world is going through a particularly seismic upheaval now.

Paul, in the book of Romans, describes our current moment in time quite well…

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles…They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. (Romans 1:21-23, 25 NIV)

During this massive sea change, it won’t help to busy ourselves rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. We don’t need endless conversations about the tumultuous sea. Nor should we buy a bigger boat. Jesus is our only hope. The sea change that’s rocking our world hasn’t caught him by surprise. He doesn’t want us to be surprised either.

That’s why Jesus tells us, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Jesus has already overcome the world. So stay with him and take heart. You’re on the right side. No matter how rough the waters get.
