Ready to Bring Your Idea to Life?

-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-

As we see in Genesis, the act of creation isn’t random. There is a purpose and an order to how God created. There is for us as well (see Six Stages of Creativity). In past readings, we’ve explored the first three stages (Curious, Converge, and Commit).

Now it is time to bring your specific idea to life...in the Create stage.

This is the season of making. Creating is different from consuming or critiquing. Both of those are more passive acts. The act of creating is, by definition, active.

While the earlier stages focused on your unique interests and passions, the Create stage shifts its focus from you to others. For a good reason. If you want others to engage with your creation, you must create with them in mind. You’re bringing something to life that will have a life of its own. It will transcend you as it expands beyond you.

It’s essential to remember this is not just a time of running after your dreams. It’s a holy space of co-creation between you and God. Pursuing your art with God is the only thing that gives it an eternal spark.

There is an idea in you that needs to be born. By design, it will be beautiful, messy, joyous, and costly. Fast isn’t the goal. A fully realized idea is. The art will let you know when it’s ready to be born. At the same time, the Create stage will have a distinct beginning and end. The goal is birth…not never-ending pregnancy.

Along the way, you may feel the pull to dream about what’s next rather than stay in what’s now. Don’t take the bait. You’re committed. When a new idea shouts for your attention, quickly jot it down in a journal. Then get back to the work at hand. But don’t be a house divided.

Your full presence is required here to bring this idea into existence.
