No Art Is Neutral
Art isn’t neutral. It just isn’t possible, though it’s tempting to think it is.
We want to just enjoy a painting, song, or movie. As if it fell out of the sky, formed without any influence, worldview, or agenda. The interpretation or meaning is up to each person to decide.
But art is never neutral. Because creators are never neutral. Everything a person makes reflects his or her heart and worldview. Even if they try to hide it.
Our creations reveal who we are and what we believe 100% of the time. It’s essential to remember this, whether you’re taking in something creative…or you’re the one creating something.
Listen to these words from Jesus: A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. (Luke 6:45 NIV)
Don’t rush past that last sentence. “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Because it isn’t limited to our mouths.
Our art speaks in the same way—based on what’s in our heart. And the options are either good or bad things. Never neutral things.
As your heart goes, so goes your art.
