The Pace of Peace

Your creative pace matters immensely—but most measure it in the wrong way.

We tend to describe our pace as fast or slow, based on external metrics like daily word count, hours spent in the studio, comparing our output to others, or getting everything on our to-do list done. The result tends to be either shame (for not keeping up) or pressure (to do even more).

That’s the pace of comparison and chaos. It’s toxic. Because we’ll never create works of life when we’re worn out, weary, and empty.

I’d like to propose a rarer, kinder pace. The pace of peace.

It reflects how God created in Genesis. He brought beauty, life, and order from chaos—but never became chaotic. When we create in this way, we stop striving. We exchange running on empty for going at God’s pace regardless of how fast or slow that may seem to others.

So what’s your current creative pace? Does your stress outweigh your joy? Do you believe it’s all up to you? Do you feel more scattered than present?

If so, I encourage you to proclaim this verse over your creativity: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:21 NIV)

Ask God to fill your project with his peace and presence in the midst of the chaos. Then create from that space. And go at his pace. The pace of peace.
