Refuse the Christmas Rush

Notice how time seems to accelerate the week after Thanksgiving?

It’s the ever-present sense that, even though we just finished celebrating Thanksgiving, we’re already behind for Christmas. Rather than stir expectancy for what’s to come, it provokes a feeling of being suddenly and hopelessly late—whether with getting the outside lights up, sending cards, buying gifts, or making travel plans. Not to mention all our normal responsibilities.

Yes, the to-do list is full. But a full season doesn’t have to be a hurried one.

Ask God for his rhythm this Christmas season. For the space and pace to savor the sounds, smells, and sights of this wondrous time of year. To notice his presence in the faces and places of each day.

Don’t take the bait of Christmas acceleration. The goal this month isn’t to get it all done (that’ll never happen). It’s to be fully present to all God has for us in this holy season. Much of that won’t be reflected in the to-do list. Because it involves us being more rather than doing more.
