The Right Guide This Fall

As a boy, I loved to go fishing with my dad. Back then, fishing wasn’t fancy. All you needed was a pole and a worm. I remember hearing about the beauty and art of fly fishing, but without a mentor or the right equipment, it felt out of reach. For someone else. Over time, I forgot about the desire.

But God remembered.

Several years ago, I was trying to schedule a whitewater river rafting trip for me and my seventeen-year-old son. The owner told me their rafting season had just wrapped up. My heart sank. I’d missed the window. Then she added, “But it’s not too late for fly fishing.” 

I was momentarily speechless. God was inviting me back into my boyhood dream…with my boy. 

Mistaking my silence for hesitancy, she said, “You can do it. All you need is the right guide.” She was right. We had the time of our lives fly fishing in a scenic Colorado mountain stream.

“It’s not too late. You can do it. All you need is the right guide.”
