The Day of Epiphany

January 6 is Epiphany, a Christian feast celebrating the manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi, or “Wise Men.”

It’s fascinating how the magi followed a star in their search for the birth of the prophesied King. In a literal sense, the star was guiding them to a stable in the middle of nowhere. But in a mythic sense, this “North Star” was guiding them back to “Eden”– not geographically, but to the One who would be the new Adam and make all things new.

And after they saw Jesus, they didn’t go back to Herod with a report. Or go back to Story 2 (their old way of living). They saw the miraculous, worshipped the baby Jesus, and followed him into Story 1 (the story God created us for).

We can too. From the moment of Adam and Eve’s tragic choice in Eden, Jesus has been our only source for regaining Story 1. To enter it, we don’t need a roadmap back to Eden. We simply need Jesus.

Over the years, the word “epiphany” has come to mean an illuminating realization or discovery, often resulting in a personal feeling of elation, awe, or wonder. May this day of Epiphany illuminate your heart and mind with a fresh sense of wonder.

Jesus is our North Star. He’s how we experience Eden again. There is no other way.
