An Experiment for the Brave

We spend way too much time staring at the glass screen in our palm. Yep, I’m going there.

We still call them phones. But we mostly use them as distraction devices. We endlessly scroll, believing what’s on the screen is more interesting or important than real life. If you think I’m exaggerating, next time you eat out, notice how many are focused on their screens more than the person across from them. Often it’s everyone at the table. Groups who are together, yet alone. At events and destinations, observe the pull to take countless photos rather than be present. We have the video but we miss the moment.

There’s no judgment here. Just observation. We’re moving in the wrong direction. We’re too attached to our phones.  And attached is a nice way to say addicted.

Yes, technology can be a useful tool. But often it uses us more than we use it. Our time is the currency and we are the product. Sure, we need to be available at times. But not all the time.

So here’s an experiment for the brave. Try spending half as much time with your phone for the next seven days. Replace those hours with more in-person conversations, walks in nature, reading a physical book, being fully present to God and those around you.

See which brings more life. Then choose life.
