Two Competing Stories

We live in a world of two competing stories.

Story 1 is the original story Adam and Eve were created for. In it, God is at the center of everything and we live in intimacy with him as sons and daughters. Unfortunately, Adam and Eve lost that story when they chose the Tree of Knowledge over the Tree of Life.

And every human since has been born into Story 2. Though this artificial story feels normal to us, it’s not what we were made for. It’s just what we’re used to. It’s a false reality in which God appears to be largely off-stage. We accuse God of being distant as we distance ourselves from him.

Traits of a Story 1 life are abundance, peace, freedom, expectancy, joy, and a heart that’s fully alive.

Traits of a Story 2 life are scarcity, fear, control, expectations, temporary relief, and a numb heart.

Which set of traits most describes your current reality? More importantly, which story would you like to be yours? If you’re not sure which one you’re in, you’re almost certainly in Story 2. Why? Because we actively have to choose to return to Story 1.

If this has you curious, I invite you to explore the topic more fully in my book, The Eden Option.
