What Good is Rebellious Clay?

In a world where we can customize anything, we often try to do the same with God. We expect him to be on our timetable. To give us endless options. To make people and things abide by our plans.

Along the way, we seek to re-shape God into an image that works for us—and we forget. He is the potter. We are the clay. He doesn't change to fit us. We are the ones being formed by him.

“What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’ Does the pot exclaim, ‘How clumsy can you be?’” (Isaiah 45:9 NLT)

Accepting that process is good. Inviting it is even better.

A good prayer along those lines is, “God, you have my full permission and cooperation. Re-shape me into who you had in mind when you made me.”
